American Red Cross of Central Texas
CROSSRoads E-Newsletter

May 1, 2009

Dear Friends,

Of course, we as Americans are focused on the swine flu outbreak and what to do about it. We've got tips for you below. But we've also got a lot of fun and exciting events happening now as well.

We're a-twitter at the American Red Cross of Central Texas because we're now on twitter and facebook. Follow us and become our friend!

We're delighted to announce Kevin McCoy as volunteer of the quarter. We'll be enjoying happy hour at Rio Grande soon as part of Philanthropy Week and we hope you can join us. And don't forget to check out our month's class schedule plus other events in the community.

There's always a time and way to get involved!

SWINE FLU
Foremeost in many of our minds is the swine flu outbreak. We are closely monitoring the situation with state and local health officials and we stand ready to help as appropriate. We will keep you abreast of the latest developments on our website, www.centex.redcross.org.

This swine flu outbreak is a good time for families, businesses and organizations to follow good public health practices and to review and update their preparedness plans.

Stocking extra food, water and supplies at home will reduce the need to go out should this swine flu strain become more widespread and schools or businesses temporarily close.

The Red Cross recommends storing a two-week supply of food, water and household necessities such as laundry detergent and toilet paper. A gallon of water per person per day should be stored in clean plastic containers. Family preparation steps should also include storing formula for infants, food for special nutritional needs, essential medicines and medical items, and extra food for pets.

Common sense basic public health practices should be followed. These include covering your cough/sneeze with a tissue, frequent hand-washing, visiting a doctor for flu-like symptoms and staying home when sick.

People seeking information on human swine flu should visit the CDC web site or call 1-800-CDC-INFO.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: KEVIN McCOY WINS VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER AWARD

The American Red Cross of Central (ARCCT) relies on volunteers.
And we seek to recognize our fantastic volunteers with regular awards. Board Member Felicia Adams presented the Volunteer of the Quarter to Kevin McCoy for his outstanding service and leadership, most recently during the UT campus apartment fires. Kevin also wrote an extensive entry that we added to our Red Cross blog. Congrats, Kevin!
