VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: STORIES FROM THE FIELD
The American Red Cross of
Central (ARCCT) relies on volunteers. Their impact
cannot be underestimated. After all, how would a staff of 17 cope with
over 150 disasters per year, serve an average of 6 military personnel
and their families with emergency communicatins and referrals and train
over 1,200 Central Texans in lifesaving skills every year? As we
strive to tell our story, we also want to tell our volunteers' stories.
These folks are on the front line every day, and they have some
amazing experiences to share! The
ARCCT web blog has become a one-stop shop for these stories and
more, so check it out!
Excerpt
from blog:
April 11, 2009
Riverside Apartment Fire
[From Volunteer Tom Davis] "The fire itself was in Building 4 of
the 4-building Riverside Square complex (Blg. 4 has 10 units/floor and
3 floors). The fire started in, and spread through, the west 3/4 of the
3rd floor. Good news/bad news: the building's structure was sound
(except for the totaled units on the 3rd floor), but there was water
damage everywhere on the 1st and 2nd floors. They had to turn off power
to the whole complex and call in an electrician to separate the power
for Blg. 4 from the others before they could turn power back on for
blgs. 1-3 and let their residents back in....The ARCCT team set up in
the office of Riverside Place. There were 11 empty units in Riverside
Place, and the management put the people who had pets into them; Carol
[Volunteer] said she'd open a shelter for the rest of the Blg. 4
residents who didn't have a place to go...."

AMERICAN RED CROSS OF CENTRAL TEXAS
JOINS AMERICA'S CHARITIES
Each year, Americans give millions of dollars to charities by
participating in workplace giving campaigns. The American Red Cross of
Central Texas is proud to now be a part of America's Charities, a
leader in workplace giving with more than $400 million delivered to
over 4,000 charities since its inception in 1980. As part of America's
Charities, we can reach out to thousands of people in Central
Texas to build awareness and directly increase our ability to continue
our direct services in disaster response and preparedness, service
to the armed forces, volunteer training and deployment and education
and training in lifesaving skills. Many local employers such as Dell
will match their employees' gifts - making an even bigger impact. We'll
keep you posted on how you can get involved!
