Dear
Friends,
Summer continues to sizzle, in both good and bad ways.
First the
bad: we've responded to 6 fires in the last week in Travis and
Bastrop Counties. Families have lost
property, a wheelchair, medications, and a beloved pet. Through your support, we
can be prepared to combat local disasters, like home fires made worse
by weather conditions and severe drought.
Now the good: we continue to
get more terrific sponsors for the IBM Uptown Classic, including Austin
Adventure Bootcamp, bettysport, Ballet Austin, Clif Bar, Cytomax,
TacoDeli, Walmart and PureSport. This means that the goodie bag is
going to be terrific, so keep watching for race registration coming soon!
And last but not least, we wanted to show you some terrific photos from our
recent partnership with One World Theatre and LifeSize to give
military children a creative showcase and link to
their deployed parents. Take a look...

Enjoy your summer!

10 WAYS TO VOLUNTEER
The American Red Cross of
Central Texas has many ways volunteers can help their community this
summer and be a part of President Barack Obama's nationwide effort -
United We Serve.
1. Tell the Red Cross story as a member of the speaker's
bureau. Represent the Red Cross at community events like the America's
Charities workplace giving campaign.
2.
Thank Red Cross contributors. Give 2 - 3 hours of your time to thank
friends and neighbors who support the mission of the Red Cross.
3.
Challenge your friends and family. Be the first to recruit the most
participants for babysitting, CPR and First Aid classes or enlist the
most people to become "Red Cross Ready" by taking the
10-minute online Red Cross education program.
4.
Help your neighbors be prepared for a disaster. Distribute information
on disasters common to your community and build disaster kits to help
friends and neighbors prepare for emergencies, or comfort kits for
those personally affected by disasters.
5.
When there is a major disaster, lend your time and skills to support
the Red Cross disaster relief effort. It's easy to get training and
receive an orientation through local volunteer resource centers. Stay
in touch to receive updates on when these centers are activated.
6.
Share your caring and humanity with people around the world. Join the
world-wide movement to vaccinate children against measles by raising
awareness of the Red Cross Measles Initiative. Make your neighbors
aware of Red Cross services to help locate loved ones in other
countries separated by disasters and war.
7.
Ensure your community has adequate sheltering in the event of an
emergency by taking Shelter Manager training.
8.
Lend a hand to a local military family by utilizing your counseling
skills to help family members cope with deployments or educate them
about aid available. Help sort Holiday Cards for Heroes in December,
ensuring military personnel and their families worldwide are remembered
during the holiday season.
9.
Be a bridge to your community. Lend your skills as a bilingual
volunteer to work directly with those affected by disasters who may
face a language barrier.
10.
Get the inside scoop on chapter operations. Come down to the local
chapter to answer phones, complete and log paperwork or help keep
supplies inventoried and stocked and official vehicles maintained.

All-American Volunteer
Celebration and Annual Meeting
August
23, 2009
Dell Diamond, Round Rock
Our Central Texas Red Cross volunteers, board, and staff are as
all-American as baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie. On Sunday, August
23, we'll celebrate with all three! We'll have a short annual meeting
at 4 pm followed by an early dinner and volunteer awards. Then we'll
catch the ballgame and watch the Round Rock Express take on the Memphis
Redbirds (Game time 6:05 pm)
Please plan to join us and bring your whole family. We want to meet
them too!
PLEASE RSVP to Amber Cooney at acooney@centex.redcross.org
or (512) 928-4271.
This is critical so we can coordinate tickets and meal orders. Please
send us your name and the number of people attending. We will assume
you are attending the game unless you tell us otherwise.

RED CROSS SUMMER SAFETY TIPS
Read all about heat safety,
water safety, safe grilling and fireworks safety online!
Heat Safety
Tips:
Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored
clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's energy. It
is also a good idea to wear hats or to use an umbrella.
Drink water....Please take the appropriate precautions to
keep you and yours safe!
Water safety at the pool and
beach:
Swim in a supervised, marked area with a lifeguard
present, and swim with others. Never swim alone.
Enter the water feet first. Enter the water headfirst only
when the area is clearly marked for diving and has no obstructions....
