Dear Friends,

During this record-breaking summer of 100+ temperatures, come cool off in one of our air-conditioned classes, at our upcoming Health Fairs at Lakeline and Barton Creek Malls, at our live sidewalk event with bettysport, or celebrate our volunteers at the Annual Recognition Event at the Dell Diamond!

By the time the IBM Uptown Classic arrives on Sunday, October 18, you should be "cool" enough to run in the race, sign up your kids for the 1K Fun-Run on Saturday, October 17, or stay home and support us with a donation!

Meanwhile,
explore our website for the latest tips, services, classes and events to keep you safe and prepared this summer!

VOLUNTEERS: WE WANT YOUR STORIES!

COW Days youth eventVolunteers are the backbone of the Red Cross and we want to connect you with your fellow volunteers plus encourage potential volunteers to join the team.

Please send in your unique volunteer story to Ericca Long along with any photos you might have. We would love to have 100-200 words about why you volunteer for the Red Cross, and please include your stories from events or disasters you have worked. We will post this on the volunteer section of the website with an eye to starting a volunteer blog that you can directly contribute to!

And if you're on facebook or twitter, please make us a friend or follow us! Don't forget to come to the Annual Volunteer Recognition event

RECENT APARTMENT POWER OUTTAGE
Last Friday, August 7, the power went off at the Travis Park Apartments - not a good thing when the temperatures are well above 100 degrees. Marcia and Fred Marks responded with the ERV (our Emergency Response Vehicle) along with Tim Garland, with coolers of ice, and water, as well as stuffed animals for the kiddoes. The City of Austin also sent an air-conditioned Cap Metro bus to the scene. There were a number of elderly among the 200+ residents, and this situation was especially dangerous for them. Power was restored by late afternoon but our volunteers were superb in stepping in to help keep people safe. Visit our website to learn more about food safety in a power outtage and how to prepare for a heatwave.
