CROSSRoads E-Newsletter

June 15, 2009

Dear Friends,

It's getting hotter by the minute out there...but it's cool in here!

Beat the heat this summer by signing up for Swim-A-Cross, take a class at our air conditioned indoor facilities, become a lifeguard, or simply keep supporting the Red Cross from the comfort of your home by following us on facebook or twitter or with your financial support of our programs and services! There's always a way to get involved.

PLUS: STAY TUNED...A BIG SALE IS COMING!

YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN 2009!

We can't serve Central Texas without you.

Cross Photo MontageIt's good to know who you can count on in an emergency.
When you give generously to your American Red Cross of Central Texas, we can strive to give back to our neighbors whenever and wherever we are needed. We are ready to teach lifesaving skills like CPR and First Aid to our neighbors in Central Texas. We can train over 1,200 volunteers during Hurricane Ike and beyond. We are ready to deploy this dedicated corps of volunteers to provide disaster response and support when a fire sweeps through an apartment complex, like it did on April 10, 2009 at the Riverside Apartment Complex (pictured at right) or at the Westheimer Regency Apartments on May 4, 2009. Over 59 cases were opened just with those 2 fires.

24/7/365: We're on call each and every day, ready to respond in Central Texas. This is why your support of your American Red Cross of Central Texas is so crucial.

SWIM-A-CROSS: YOU'VE STILL GOT TIME TO GET WET!

Swim-A-Cross

Swim-A-Cross has already begun, but there's still time to get your swim group involved while raising money for the Red Cross and your own club. Swim-A-Cross is a great tool to learn water safety, teambuilding, fundraising, and just plain have some fun! Last year, twenty-five teams swam for the Red Cross, getting generous sponsorships for every lap they swam, and donating half the proceeds to support this local Red Cross chapter. The other half was kept for their swim club and supported their efforts. There's still time to sign up. Registration forms are also available online at

www.centex.redcross.org/events/swimacross.php. We (and Longfellow the Whale) look forward to seeing you this summer!

WORLD REFUGEE DAY: JUNE 20

Every year on June 20, the world honors the courage, resilience and strength of refugees. On this  anniversary of the United Nations-designated World Refugee Day, organizations across the globe will come together to focus attention not only on the plight of refugees, but also on the contributions they make in their host communities. On this day, the American Red Cross and the other 185 national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world will reaffirm the needs of refugees and our commitment to help them at home and abroad. Locally, the American Red Cross of Central Texas serves a vital role in restoring family links due to separation by war or other disasters or emergencies through emergency communications and tracing services.
